Espa is world leader Spa and Spa Consultancy. Their expertise and success is recognized throughout the industry. Phulay Bay, a Ritz Carlton Reserve, is a world class luxury destination hotel from the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company. The resort is designed by the renowned architect, Khun Lek Bunnag. As part of the resort, 3 spa buildings were to be renovated and extended. Architects 49 Limited (Phuket) completed the architectural work which followed the concept of Buddhist beliefs. Emphases on the rustic, melancholy, loneliness and the natural world were reflected in the use of bamboo and natural stone throughout the project. The Reception is where the spa journey begins. The extension building boasts a steel structure with 2-storey height glazing. To control daylight, tall metal screens are used in a lattice pattern. The inspiration is taken from Thai art, tradition and Buddhist beliefs. These are again reflected in the feature mosaic wall of the reception (similar to the techniques used in Thai temples) and the lighting features which are reminiscent of sky lanterns know as Khom Loy from Northern Thailand. Interestingly, Thai people especially Buddhists believe the lantern is symbol of your problems and worries floating away. It is tradition to offer the lanterns to temples and monks. Givers believe they will receive enlightenment in return. The flame of the lantern symbolizes wisdom and shows them the right path The changing area is used as the second part of the journey. It is when guests are asked to spend at least 45 minutes prior to treatment to change and shower. They then go to the heat experiences with an option of steam or rock sauna and then to the vitality pool. Once finished guests then go to the relaxation area in bathrobes. The design of this area emphasizes the simplicity and fluidity of the journey through the space planning. The organic curved plan gives a smooth continuous journey that leads the guests to each experience sequentially. The steam room is one of the spa special features. The spa host then leads the guests to their treatment rooms. There are 4 single suits, 2 couple suites, a Thai single, a Thai double and a single multi-use massage rooms. Symmetrical planning is used to keep storage and equipment in cabinets. A ritual chair accents the lattice wall pattern with a metal lattice. A similar pattern is used in antique gold leaves behind the sink area. The ceiling has been redone to accommodate the indirect lighting in the treatment area. The VIPs have a separate drop off and entrance area. There are 2 VIP couple suites. The design of the VIP suites reflects Buddhist beliefs. Emphasis on simplicity and the importance of the natural world generate a distinctive aesthetic. Other facilities available are The Consultation Rooms and Wellness studio which offer Yoga, Tai-chi and meditation.
